06/23/2010 - New Orleans, LA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - New Orleans Hornets owner George Shinn released a statement Wednesday, saying star point guard Chris Paul is the franchise's "cornerstone" and the player the team will continue to build around.
The statement provides an answer to rumblings that teams have made trade offers for Paul, and to a report from ESPN.com, in which Paul said he was open to being traded if the team wasn't committed to winning.
However, Shinn's statement indicates the club will keep and continue to be centered around Paul:
"The resolve that my partner Gary Chouest and I have will always remain the same -- to continue to build our legacy in New Orleans, and to develop a path and plan to win an NBA Championship for New Orleans and all of Louisiana. We are about building and sustaining a winning tradition. Chris Paul is the cornerstone of our franchise and brings us unequaled support on and off the court. We will continue to build around Chris Paul, and we want to see him in a Hornets uniform for the remainder of his career. We have an exciting future, and with the leadership of our new head coach and players like Chris Paul, we know the best is yet to come. We plan to take advantage of any opportunities to improve our team."
Paul led the Hornets to the Western Conference semifinals in 2007-08 and the team reached the playoffs the following season. But this past season New Orleans went 37-45 as Paul was limited to 45 games because of injury.
Paul's contract will pay him about $45 million over the next three seasons, and he has a player option for 2012-13 worth nearly $18 million.
Paul has averaged 19.3 points, 10 assists, 4.7 rebounds and 2.4 assists in his five seasons in the league. He was named Rookie of the Year in 2005-06 after the Hornets selected him fourth overall in the draft, and has been selected to three All-Star Games. Paul has also led the NBA in assists twice and steals three times.
